Gawai Day or Gawai Dayak is a festival celebrated on 1st June every year.It is both a religious and social occasion.The mode of celebration varies from place to place.Before the big day approaches,everyone will be busy cleaning and preparing food and cakes.
The celebration starts on the evening of 31st May.In most Iban longhouses,it starts with a ceremony called Muai Antu Rua,to cast away the spirit of greed.
Around 6pm or when the sun sets,an offering ceremony called miring takes place.The chief of ceremony thanks the God for the good harvest and asks for guidance,blessings and long life as the purpose of this ceremony.
At midnight,the gong is beaten to get the celebrants attention.Chief of the longhouses will lead them to drink Ai Pengayu,and wishes each other for longlife,health and blessings.
Gawai Dayak celebration lasts for several days,and followed by other activities a few days later,like cock-fighting competition,etc.
